When was Memorial Day First Observed?

Memorial Day was first proclaimed "Decoration Day" on May 5, 1868, and was first observed on May 30th of the same year.  The date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of a battle.  The holiday was intended to honor the Union & Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War.  In 1882 the name was changed to Memorial Day to honor ALL United States soldiers who died in service to our country.
